“Absolutely fascinating & glorious morning on our beachcomb. Highly recommended. Not only did we get to hold things that were literally millions of years old, we also left with a huge sense of respect for our shingle beaches. Thanks so much, Kate. You were a fantastic, fun & informative guide.”

A handful of beachcombed treasure from Felixstowe beach

Let Beach Bonkers take you beachcombing and open your eyes to a whole new world of treasures hiding amongst the stones at your feet. Once you start, you won’t want to stop!

Beachcombing is the best treasure hunt there is!

Beachcombing the strandline is a unique chance to appreciate the amazing animals that live in our seas. Every beach find tells a story -- whether it’s the egg cases of creatures we never see, driftwood eaten by hungry shipworms, sharks’ teeth & fossils that are millions of years old, or glass frosted by the stones & waves. Our shingle beaches are a rare and fragile habitat that's full of specially adapted plants and wildlife.

No one starts a bespoke beachcomb knowing what they’ll find and no one finishes a beachcomb disappointed.  And no one does it without wanting to do it all over again as soon as they can. Good job there are two tides a day to cast up new treasures!

Beachcombing with Beach Bonkers you will not only learn the best places on the beach to find your treasures, but I will also help you identify them and tell the tales of the shells, egg cases, stones, and other natural riches you will find.

You can read what other people have to say about their beachcombing experiences with me here.

As well as guided beachcombs, I can give a talk in person to your group or club. Not just any talk, this jam packed 45 minutes is full of treasures for you to handle and even a quiz! I can also bring a portable mini-beach, tableful of beachcombed treasures and giant beachcombing board game to your venue. Please contact me for more information.

A bit more about Kate, who founded Beach Bonkers …

My background was working in the NHS, academia and publishing but I went back to college to study conservation. While employed on a big coastal project getting people out to explore our coastal landscape, I had a lightbulb moment on Felixstowe beach. From that moment, I made it my mission to get people to explore the very stones under their feet and my guided beachcombing walks started.

When the project finished, I set up Beach Bonkers to inspire people about Suffolk’s shingle beaches. I do this by taking people beachcombing, sharing both my tips on where to find treasures & my knowledge about those treasures. I take the beach to people who can’t get to it (at libraries, clubs, school, fetes and festivals to name just a few locations) and by giving talks.

What's In A Name?

A friend once said "You're bonkers, but lovely." So I thought “Bonkers about Beachcombing” might be a cool name. Another friend said “it's a bit long, how about Beach Bonkers?” And that was that.
